The Postal Service Makes Drastic Cuts

The closure of almost half of the country’s mail processing centers, as well as almost 4,000 local post offices, means that it may take longer to send and receive your mail.

Starting in the spring, it may take a little while longer to get your mail.

Facing bankruptcy, the U.S. Postal Service plans to make an estimated $3 billion in cuts, including the elimination of next-day delivery on first class mail, according to the Associated Press. When the changes take effect, first class delivery will take two to three days.

With the new cuts, the USPS would close about 250 of the nearly 500 mail processing centers across the country, in addition to 3,700 local post offices. About 100,000 total postal employees left jobless, saving the agency $6.5 billion, according to the report.

The Restoration Plaza post office in Bed-Stuy is among those offices slated to close. The Times Plaza station in Boerum Hill, feared to close, is in do danger, according to the USPS.

The Postal Service, as an independent agency of government, does not receive any tax money.

List of closures set for Brookyn:

RESTORATION PLAZA, 11216

MUNICIPAL FINANCE, 11201

SUNSET, 11220

OVINGTON, 11220

BRIGHTON FINANCE, 11235
