MLK Concert Series Kicks off

By C. Zawadi Morris | Bed-Stuy Patch

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series kicked off today with a stellar concert lineup of performances that will be held every Monday night through August 22, 7:30pm at Wingate Park in Crown Heights.

Maze, featuring Fankie Beverly will lead the first of several free concerts in Wingate Park on Brooklyn Avenue between Rutland Road, followed by a dozen of other popular classic soul, hip hop, Caribbean and gospel music acts throughout the summer, including Queen Latifah, Jeffrey Osborne, Peabo Bryson, Freddie Jackson, Shaggy and others.

At the Coney Island location for the Seaside Summer Series, top-name pop, classic rock and Latin performances include Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, the Monkees and many others.

“The shows will go on at Coney Island this summer,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, who is hosting the 33rd annual music series.

“We’re excited to have Joan Jett and the Blackhearts kick off the Seaside Summer Concert Series at our new Coney location this year, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series is still going strong after three decades of music. I am proud to host the two largest free outdoor concert series in the New York area, and of course, this year’s performers in Brooklyn, USA!”

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series is celebrating its spectacular 29th season. The public is encouraged to bring its own chairs. A limited number of $5 rental chairs in a specially designated area are available on a first come, first served basis.

Performers are subject to change without notice. Call the concert hotline for updates at 718-222-0600 or visit
